Curatorial notes
This is a photographic reproduction by Andries Jager, of a painting by Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen, depicting cows and sheep near a ruin. During the 19th century, the Netherlands experienced a surge of national pride coupled with the rise of romantic nationalism. This image reflects these sensibilities by depicting the Dutch landscape as a site of national identity. The tranquil countryside, dotted with farm animals and the romantic ruin, evokes a sense of nostalgia for a simpler, pre-industrial past. In Dutch art of this period, there was a conscious effort to move away from the grand historical narratives that had dominated earlier art towards more intimate, domestic scenes. Images of rural life and landscapes became vehicles for exploring themes of national character, virtue, and connection to the land. This artwork captures the longing for a connection to the land and to the past. In a rapidly changing world, it presents a comforting vision of rural life and enduring national identity.
