Charles Rochussen created this print, "Vrouw te paard", using etching and drypoint. Rochussen lived and worked during a time of significant social change in the Netherlands. As the Industrial Revolution progressed, class distinctions became ever more apparent, which is arguably on display here. The picture depicts a woman on horseback, in what seems to be a position of power. Yet, her dark clothing hints at mourning, perhaps alluding to the personal sacrifices often made to maintain social status. The setting, seemingly rural and quaint, is contrasted by the woman's refined presence. While the figures around her appear to be in distress, she remains detached, observing the scene with a stoic expression. This image captures the complex interplay between individual experience and social expectation, reflecting the evolving roles of women in the 19th century. It leaves us to consider the emotional weight carried by individuals navigating a world of rigid social structures.
