Lourdes Castro made this playful construction using translucent perspex and folded paper. There is something so engaging about the handmade feel of the piece; the marks are raw, direct, and unsentimental. The contrast between the slick surface of the perspex and the matte paper is what really grabs me. I find myself drawn to the almost childlike quality of the marks on the right, like the artist is learning to write, tentatively feeling her way into each gesture and curve. The choice of a vibrant pink feels intentional, heightening the tension between light and shadow, presence and absence, and underscoring the work’s preoccupation with layers and reflections. It makes me think about the work of Lygia Clark, who also played with light and shadows, but in a more sculptural way. Ultimately, like all good art, this piece invites us to look again, to question our assumptions and embrace ambiguity.
