Chōbunsai Eishi created this woodblock print titled "Oiran and Attendants at the Ō Mon or Great Gate of the Yoshiwara". The composition presents a procession of figures in a shallow space. The cool colors, dominated by blues and greens, create a subdued, elegant atmosphere. The formal structure is established by a series of vertical lines which demarcate the figures and the imposing gate. This emphasis on linearity and symmetry divides the pictorial space while flattening depth. The gate, a rigid frame, contains a bustling yet distant urban scene, contrasting the enclosed world of the Yoshiwara with the outside. The patterns on the kimonos, the stylized faces, and the rhythmic arrangement of the figures suggest a highly codified social structure. The print mediates between visibility and concealment, between the individual and the collective. In essence, the artwork uses formal means to address the complex interplay of class, gender, and social space within the Yoshiwara district.
