This Psaltery or dulcimer was made by Antonio Battaglia. The musical instrument presents a captivating interplay of geometric forms and decorative details. The trapezoidal shape of the instrument is emphasized by its linear elements, from the straight lines of the frame to the parallel strings stretched across the soundboard. The dark wood of the frame, contrasted by the warm tones of the soundboard, creates a visual tension. The two circular soundholes break the linear pattern and serve as focal points. The eye is drawn to the intricate patterns along the upper edge, adding visual complexity. These details, combined with the play of light on the instrument's surface, invite closer inspection and appreciation of the craftsmanship. The Psaltery or dulcimer functions not only as a source of musical expression but also as a cultural artifact. It embodies both artistic and philosophical values. The instrument's design reflects how cultural meanings are embedded in its physical form, inviting us to consider its aesthetic and symbolic dimensions.

The dulcimer was played using hand-held hammers and may thus be seen as the forerunner of the piano. The variable dynamics and magical expression of the so-called Pantalon, the giant dulcimer invented by Pantaleon Hebenstreit, inspired many harpsichord makers to use hammer actions in their instruments. This small instrument belonged to Stadholder William V.
