Curatorial notes

Aimé-Jules Dalou sculpted this bronze portrait bust of Alphonse Legros. From a formal perspective, the bust presents a study in contrasts, the rough, textured treatment of the beard and hair offsets the relatively smoother surfaces of the face. Dalou uses a traditional sculptural medium to convey what we might call a modern sensibility. The artist isn't trying to replicate Legros's likeness with photographic precision. Instead, the bust captures something more ephemeral: the essence, perhaps, of Legros's character. Consider, too, the way Dalou plays with light and shadow. The deep recesses of the eyes and the folds of the drapery create a play of chiaroscuro, lending the sculpture a dramatic flair. The bust hovers between classical representation and a more expressive mode, inviting us to consider how traditional forms can be infused with new meaning and vitality.
