Richard Tepe created this photograph, “House with Antlers on the Facade”, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. Tepe worked during a period of significant social and technological change, when photography was being used to document aspects of life and culture. In the image, the house presents itself as a proud marker of identity, a building materialization of wealth and status. The antlers are prominently displayed; the house becomes a stage for a very gendered performance of rural masculinity. The trophy antlers, mounted above the entrance, are not just decoration; they symbolize a specific relationship to the natural world, one of dominance and control. It's a striking display, one that speaks volumes about cultural values. Through this image, Tepe invites us to consider how architecture and symbols reflect societal values and power structures, and to reflect on what these houses represent.
