Editor: So this is a book cover with a cross pattern, in blues and yellows. It dates from somewhere between 1800 and 1900 and it's currently at the Met. Looking at it, it feels surprisingly modern. How do you see this piece? Curator: For me, this isn't just a book cover; it's a portal. I see echoes of Islamic tile work blended with the rigid geometries of early industrial design, don’t you think? The artist is unknown, making this little geometric dance all the more mysterious, wouldn't you agree? It makes you wonder about the original book and what untold stories lie hidden beneath this deceptively simple print. Editor: That’s interesting – I hadn't considered the Islamic influence, but now that you mention it, I can definitely see it. The blue, yellow, and dark oval motifs form this infinite-seeming design. Why do you call the design geometric? Curator: Well, look at it! The basic unit is repeated almost mechanically. Do you not get that impression of repetition? This wasn't created in a vacuum, so it had to have been a well thought out exercise for it's specific time. Plus, it has echoes of movements to come. It anticipates, if you will, a century of radical pattern design and pure abstraction in fine art. Imagine holding this unassuming cover while reading some epic poem of the era – wouldn't you? Editor: I suppose so. It’s strange to think such a seemingly plain design could be so rich. I will need to consider these things going forward! Curator: Absolutely! Never underestimate the power of the small and unassuming. That's where the best secrets often hide.
