Edward Loper created this watercolour painting titled Lantern. Loper was a Black American artist who grew up in the early to mid-20th century. During this time, the aftermath of slavery and the rise of the Civil Rights Movement profoundly shaped the experiences and identities of Black individuals. In this seemingly simple image of a lantern, there are embedded themes of light, guidance, and hope. The lantern, an object used to illuminate dark paths, can be seen as a metaphor for the challenges Black Americans faced, and their resilience in overcoming adversity. Loper's choice of such an everyday object speaks to the dignity and significance of ordinary lives, subtly countering prevailing stereotypes. The lantern's muted colors and slightly worn appearance might suggest the hardships endured, yet its upright stance conveys a sense of strength and perseverance. In Loper's work we find the historical and cultural weight of a community's struggle made visible.
