Willi Baumeister made "Shamash told us to fight against Chumbaba" and I imagine he drew into the ground of the paper to produce this print. Look how the black ink weaves and dances, creating a sense of rhythm and movement. There are these repeated shapes and these scratchy marks, a kind of language that's both familiar and alien. Maybe he felt pulled between different desires and ideas, and this print became a way for him to explore that tension. I find myself wondering about the relationship between drawing and storytelling in his work. What stories might he have wanted to tell with this image? Does it tell stories of its own? I think Baumeister is in conversation with Klee and Miro, other artists who created signs and symbols in their work. Ultimately, it's about leaving space for uncertainty, for allowing the work to speak in its own way.
