These are postcards of paintings of Saint Liduina of Schiedam by Hrs. Rebers. The black and white images capture scenes from the life of the saint, rendered with a stark and graphic style. The upper image stages a scene with angels in the midst of a town setting. Rebers carefully uses composition and texture to guide the viewer's eye. Notice the use of high contrast between the figures and the background, with the light figures set against a dark architectural setting, which pulls forward the composition. The symmetry of the composition is divided between angels and the town setting, which creates a visual tension. The angels almost appear to be descending from a stage set, which seems to play with the viewer's perception of the event. These elements create a visually compelling narrative, and reveal how even in the format of a postcard, Rebers invites us to see the religious narrative in innovative terms. These artworks offer a space where the language of the everyday meets the transcendental.
