Four Studies of a Woman's Head and Two of a Seated Woman 1705 - 1721

This sheet of studies was made by Jean-Antoine Watteau, a master of the Rococo, using red, black, and white chalk. Notice how the figures, rendered with delicate lines and subtle shading, seem to float on the paper, creating a sense of lightness. Watteau’s studies exemplify a focus on capturing fleeting moments and emotional nuances. The use of three colours of chalk allows Watteau to define form, depth and expression.
