Lodewijk Schelfhout made this print, Christus, using etching, a printmaking technique where lines are incised into a metal plate with acid. The matrix is metal, likely copper, and the marks are made by acid biting into it. Look closely, and you can see the velvety quality, the finely drawn lines, which make this print so special. The etched lines create a delicate drawing of Christ in profile, capturing a sense of serenity and introspection. The network of carefully etched lines define the contours of Christ's face and hair, creating a sense of depth and volume. Etching has a long history, and although it’s a print, it requires specialized technical skill. It has its own tradition of aesthetics, a history of creative practices alongside that of craft and fine arts. By considering materials, making and context we can expand the way we think about art.
