Christ with the Samaritan Woman at the Well

Editor: We are looking at Carl Heinrich Rahl's, *Christ with the Samaritan Woman at the Well*. It's a really striking composition, very serene. What do you make of it? Curator: Well, it makes me think about boundaries, both social and spiritual. Here are these two figures, from different worlds, meeting at this very liminal space, the well. Editor: Liminal how? Curator: It's a place of transition, isn’t it? Not quite public, not quite private. Notice how they're both at the edge, almost daring each other to cross some invisible line. Editor: I guess I never really saw it that way before. It’s cool to think about how a simple scene can have so many layers. Curator: Art is rarely what it seems at first glance, isn't it?
