Sofia Areal made this Untitled painting, we don’t know exactly when, but the colours, lines, and shapes give a clue to her process. I would say it’s about the joy of making something. The canvas shows Sofia uses the paint freely, almost like she’s dancing with the brush. Look at how the red and ochre shapes balance each other, and how the white circles bounce around, connecting everything. The black squiggles add a bit of wildness, like a sudden burst of energy. I especially love the way the paint drips and splatters, it feels raw and alive. It reminds me of Joan Mitchell, who also knew how to let loose with paint. But Sofia has her own voice, her own way of making chaos sing. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t have to be perfect or make sense, it just has to be real.
