This untitled print was made by Gordinne, and is a lithograph. It is made using a series of twelve small illustrations arranged in a grid format, each one an independent little joke or story. I love the color palette, there are muted greens and blues, soft pinks and reds. These colors don’t shout, they whisper. The touch is delicate and light, which reminds me of the way that Honoré Daumier used to use line and color in his satirical prints. Look at the third vignette in the top row, for instance, in which a man is delivering a speech to a crowd. The artist uses quick, calligraphic lines to describe the action, and then gently tints the scene with washes of color. This piece reminds me that making art is like participating in a conversation across time. It’s like we are all just riffing on each other, interpreting and reinterpreting the world around us. Art is always open to new meanings, it embraces ambiguity, and that’s what makes it so exciting.
