Steve Kahn made this photograph, "The Hollywood Suites (Windows) #16," using the starkness of black and white to capture something really interesting. I wonder how he achieved such a fine grain, almost like paint. I imagine Kahn walking around Hollywood, looking for the most interesting light, the most interesting shadow, the most interesting building. And then he finds this one, with its two windows, evenly spaced and then covered by what looks like a white sheet. It's almost dreamlike. It reminds me of the paintings of Agnes Martin with their delicate lines, and the way she manages to convey so much with so little. What was he thinking when he made it? Was he looking through these windows? Photographers and painters, we are all in an ongoing conversation, exchanging ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Each image is both ambiguous and certain, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
