Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this drawing of a bridge over a canal in a city with graphite on paper. You know, when I look at this, I think about that moment when you're out walking and something catches your eye, and you just have to capture it, right there and then. I can feel him, standing there, quickly trying to pin down the light, the shape of the bridge, the way the trees frame the scene. Look at how he uses these quick, confident marks to build up the forms. It’s all about capturing the essence of the place, not getting bogged down in the details. I imagine Vreedenburgh was thinking about light and shadow, how they play across the buildings and water. The lack of color almost makes it more immediate, more about the structure and the feeling of the place. It’s like he’s saying, ‘Here, look at this. Isn't it something?’ And you know what? It is. It really is.
