This little photograph of Isabel Wachenheimer feeding pigeons at Odeonsplatz in Munich was taken sometime between July 1931 and February 1932. It’s a simple black and white image, a snapshot of a moment in time. I think of the act of photography itself, how it freezes a scene, editing out the before and after, and isolating a single perspective. You can almost imagine the photographer, likely a member of the Wachenheimer family, carefully framing the shot, trying to capture Isabel’s wonder as she is swarmed by pigeons. What was it like to be there, in that moment? To feel the flutter of wings, the cooing of birds, the chill of a European winter? And to then develop this memento and paste it into an album of memories, turning the everyday into something precious. This photograph speaks to me about the fragile beauty of fleeting moments.
