Editor: Eric Baden's black and white photograph, L.I.R.R. Station, Massapequa Park, presents a stark, almost bleak view. What visual symbols stand out to you in this image? Curator: The most potent symbols for me are the advertisements. They reveal a cultural landscape saturated with consumerism, and how these pervasive images become part of our collective memory. What emotions do these signs evoke in you? Editor: A sense of nostalgia, maybe, but also unease at how fleeting these symbols of desire really are. I see both familiarity and distance. Curator: Indeed. The layering of these symbols creates a visual narrative about a specific time and place, and the cultural values it represents. Consider how they reflect identity and aspiration. Editor: It’s interesting to consider the weight each of these signs carries, and how they interact with the environment. Thanks, I never thought of it that way!
