Vilhelm Lundstrom made this study sheet, "Ark med forskellige kompositioner og figurstudier" using graphite. It looks like he was really thinking through the process. I love the immediacy and the raw quality of this sheet. It's all about the hand moving, exploring different forms, and maybe how they fit together. The texture of the paper is really apparent, and the smudges and stains give it this feeling of being well-worn and actively used, like a real artifact from the studio. I keep thinking about how the smudges and marks echo the more consciously drawn marks of the graphite. It's all part of the same language. There's this one little figure study near the top right that’s so quick, so gestural. It reminds me a bit of some of Picasso's studies, especially in how it manages to capture so much with just a few lines. It reminds you that art is just a conversation, artists looking and responding to each other across time. It's ambiguous, it's open, and it's really about the process more than anything else.
