Curatorial notes

This is an albumen print portrait of an unknown woman, made by the Engelsch Photographisch Etablissement. Photography in the 19th century was very much about portraying a certain status and respectability. Here, the sitter is formally posed, dressed in her best clothes, seated next to an ornate table and chair. Yet, what stories might lie beneath this surface? As we consider the image, questions emerge about the woman’s identity, her place in society, and her personal history. What were the circumstances of her life? How did she navigate the social norms and expectations of her time? There’s a palpable sense of dignity and resilience in her gaze. Even in the confines of a formal portrait, her humanity shines through. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the countless untold stories of women whose lives have been overlooked by history. It prompts us to reflect on the complexities of identity, representation, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
