Editor: This is Tracey Emin's neon artwork, "Is Legal Sex Anal?" I find the question really provocative; what do you make of it? Curator: Emin consistently challenges public discourse around sexuality and the body. The work places a very personal question in a public space, highlighting the politics of intimacy. How does this placement affect your interpretation? Editor: It feels very direct, almost like graffiti, but the gallery setting gives it a different kind of weight. It encourages me to consider the historical context of laws and power relations. Curator: Exactly. Emin's work often exposes the social construction of sexuality, forcing us to confront uncomfortable truths about control and consent. I am glad that you could come to that understanding. Editor: I am so glad I asked because I was focusing on the individual and now I see a wider scope to it. Curator: Wonderful, this illuminates Tracey Emin's work so well.

Is Legal Sex Anal? and its complement, Is Anal Sex Legal? (Tate T11890), are pink neon signs made in Emin’s signature handwritten text, spelling out the words of the titles. They are mounted on the wall, above head height, either individually or together. There is no set relationship between the two works. They were produced in an edition of three. Tate’s copies are the artist’s proofs.
