Giovanni Lanfranco created this drawing, "Apostle Carried by Angels in a Spandrel," with pen and brown ink. The composition focuses on the interplay between verticality and dynamic movement. Lanfranco uses hatching and cross-hatching techniques to build volume and suggest the play of light and shadow. The Apostle, positioned atop the cloud formation, gestures outward, creating a visual dialogue that extends beyond the pictorial space. The rapid, energetic lines give the figures a sense of animation, fitting the Baroque aesthetic's emphasis on drama and emotion. This study is a preparatory sketch for a larger, more complex ceiling fresco. The very architecture is rendered through this energetic drawing style which destabilizes the architectural form. In breaking with the conventions of fixed perspective it asks us to consider how new artistic techniques might engage with the infinite.
