Curatorial notes

This is Reijer Stolk's 'Anatomische studie van de zij- en armspieren van een man in silhouet', currently held at the Rijksmuseum. It is a work that invites us to reflect on the visual and cultural construction of the human body. The silhouette, rendered in stark black and white, dissects and labels the male anatomy. It brings up questions around the body as a site of both knowledge and power. During the early to mid 20th century, when Stolk was active, the male body was often idealized as a symbol of strength. The dissection of the male form can be seen as an exploration of the boundaries between science, art, and the lived experience of being in a body. We see the complex interplay between external appearance and internal structure, challenging the viewer to consider what it means to inhabit a body that is both a physical reality and a cultural construct.
