Lawrence Phillips made this small painting of a side chair, and look at those lines! I love how economical and simple the drawing is. It almost feels like Phillips drew the chair from memory. I wonder what Phillips was thinking about when he made it. Maybe he was thinking of all the chairs he had ever sat on? The legs are interesting - it's almost as if the artist was playing around with the idea of human/ animal features. The paws at the bottom are such a playful touch. I'm curious about why Phillips was drawn to this particular chair. The lyre on the backrest is an unusual detail, giving the chair a classical, almost musical quality. I wonder if the artist had other works playing with furniture? So many artists have taken on this subject. Like Van Gogh who painted his own chair - not because it was something to sit on, but as a kind of a portrait.
