This is a papkom, or porringer, made of silver by Frederik van Strant II in the 18th century. The silversmith likely formed the bowl of the porringer by raising, a technique where a flat sheet of metal is hammered and shaped over a stake. Notice the handles, cast separately with intricate shell-like details, which would then be soldered onto the bowl. Consider the properties of silver itself – its malleability which allows it to be shaped, its reflective surface which provides a sense of luxury, and its cost, making it a precious material. This object reflects a culture of consumption where even everyday items were elevated through skilled labor, specialized tools, and valuable materials. The papkom is an example of fine craftsmanship that transcends its function. By considering the materials, techniques, and social context, we can understand its value and the labor involved in its creation, challenging any divide between art and craft.
