Editor: Here we have an Antoninianus of Maximianus I. The coin has an aged look. How would you interpret its symbols? Curator: Consider the Emperor's image: the radiate crown signifying divine association, and the inscription around the edge reinforcing authority. Even in its wear, it speaks volumes about power. What does it tell you? Editor: I see it as an everyday object imbued with meaning. I hadn't considered the crown as an explicit assertion of power. Curator: Indeed, and the imagery on the reverse would offer further clues about the priorities and messaging of the reign. It gives insight into the world view of the time. Editor: Fascinating! I will never look at money the same way.
