Pieter Ras made this pencil drawing, Landschap met vaart en boerderij, at an unknown date. Ras produced this sketch in the Netherlands, a country where landscape painting was more than just an artistic genre; it was a declaration of national identity. This drawing, with its emphasis on the flat, open landscape and the implication of human presence through the suggestion of a waterway, evokes a sense of Dutch perseverance in shaping their environment. But Ras was active during a time of great social and artistic change. Photography was becoming more popular which challenged traditional art forms and art institutions. We can see that Ras embraced this change by producing sketches instead of more traditional, academic paintings. To fully appreciate Ras's place in Dutch art history, we can consult exhibition catalogs, artists' biographies, and studies of Dutch landscape painting. Only then we can fully understand the social conditions that influenced his artistic choices.
