This is a Cloud Study, made by John Constable in the early 19th century with watercolor over graphite on paper. Constable masterfully captures the ephemerality of clouds. But clouds! They are not merely meteorological phenomena. Since antiquity, clouds have symbolized the dwelling place of gods, transitions, and the insubstantial nature of the earthly realm. Consider the divine apparitions in Renaissance paintings, or even Zeus, the cloud-gatherer, in ancient Greek myths. Clouds have been associated with the sublime and the transcendental. The emotional power of Constable’s clouds lies in their ability to evoke a sense of awe and contemplation, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. These painted clouds can be seen as a recurring motif, forever shifting, and resurfacing across the canvas of art history.
