This print was made by Jan Schuitemaker in the Netherlands sometime during or after the period it depicts, 1672 to 1702. Its scenes relate to the reign of William III and are clearly intended for children. These images give us an insight into the period’s values and anxieties, and how they were being passed on. Each scene is accompanied by text. Together, the images and text promote patriotic feeling through stories of national importance. Consider, for example, the scene depicting the English landing on the Dutch coast in 1672. The accompanying text speaks of God's protection, suggesting the narrative functions as a moral lesson. These images are of interest to historians because they reflect the concerns of the time. By looking at Dutch history books and other printed material from the period, we can better understand how Schuitemaker’s print was intended to shape the values of its young audience.
