Sean Scully made this Wall of Light Desert Night painting using oil paint, creating a patchwork of blues, blacks, whites, and yellows. Just looking at the surface, I can see the painting emerging through layers. I can almost feel Scully building up those colors, shifting between light and dark. I can imagine him, lost in his own world, trying to capture that fleeting desert light. I wonder if he was thinking about Agnes Martin, or maybe Rothko, two artists also interested in light and color. Look how the vertical brushstrokes on the rectangular forms add texture. See how they contrast against the blocks of deep blue, and the white spaces between, creating this cool push and pull. Like a lot of painting, there’s an ambiguity, a sense of being unfinished. It's an ongoing conversation between the artist and the canvas. It reminds me that the best art opens up space for uncertainty.
