This untitled artwork was made by EtchingRoom1, sometime after 2016, and looks to be created with ink and collage. It’s a real process piece, you know? Like the artist is working things out as they go, playing with abstraction and representation. There's something about the material quality of this piece that really draws me in. The contrast between the solid black shapes, the textured rendering of the wall and the delicate lines of the geometric shapes is really striking. I keep coming back to this one particular mark, this little burst of blue ink. It's so small, but it adds a spark of energy to the whole composition. It is as if this tiny gesture holds the key to unlocking the whole piece. Looking at this piece, I am reminded of the work of Dorothea Tanning, who like EtchingRoom1, used collage to create dreamlike, uncanny compositions. Both artists seem to be interested in exploring the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind. Ultimately, this is a piece that embraces ambiguity, inviting us to bring our own experiences and interpretations to the table.
