Louis Jacques Cathelin created this engraving of Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, at a time when visual representations of royalty were carefully crafted to project power and legitimacy. However, the image also exists within a broader, more complex narrative of gender, class, and revolution. As an Austrian princess thrust into the French court, Marie Antoinette became a lightning rod for discontent. Her perceived extravagance and foreignness fueled the growing resentment among the French populace, who were struggling with poverty and famine. This portrait, with its ornate frame and detailed rendering of the Queen's attire, can be seen as both a symbol of her privileged status and a reflection of the social inequalities that ultimately led to the French Revolution. While the portrait attempts to convey an image of regal grace, it's impossible to ignore the historical context in which it was created and received. It serves as a potent reminder of the complex relationship between power, representation, and the tumultuous events that would soon engulf Marie Antoinette and the French monarchy.

This engraving preserves a lost portrait of the young twenty-year-old queen and was issued the year after Louis XVI was crowned king. Initially popular with the French public, the young Austrian princess made a memorable impression at her husband's coronation in her extravagant dress designed by the exclusive Parisian couturière, Rose Bertin, which embraced the latest trends in French fashion, and also for her famous "pouf" hairdo. Yet rumors still plagued Marie Antoinette's existence at the court, particularly with regard to intimate life with her husband, since after five years of marriage, she had still not fulfilled her primary duty of producing a child, and more important, a male heir to the throne.
