Otto Scholderer sketched 'Luise Scholderer sitting with cat' in pencil, but when and where is unknown. Although there is no date assigned to this work, Scholderer was a German painter associated with the circle of artists around Gustave Courbet. Given the naturalism of the drawing, and the domesticity of the composition, we can assume it reflects the values of that particular artistic circle. It does not critique institutions of art. This drawing raises questions about the place of women in German society at the time, and their association with domesticity and animals. To truly understand this drawing we need to use a range of research resources, from art criticism to historical documents. This way, we can better understand its cultural and institutional context.
