"The Visitation," a delicate engraving, was created in the mid-15th century by Master ES. In this image, Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth. Both women are pregnant, Mary with Jesus and Elizabeth with John the Baptist. Consider the implications of this meeting: two women, both carrying the weight of immense expectation and divine destiny, meet. Here, Master ES portrays an intimate moment of mutual support and understanding. These women find themselves in exceptional circumstances, set apart by their pregnancies in a patriarchal society, and they offer each other solace. Despite the religious context, this image resonates with shared human experiences of pregnancy, anticipation, and female solidarity. The artist invites us to contemplate the emotional and personal dimensions of faith.
