Joachim Wtewael painted this ‘Kitchen Interior With The Parable Of The Great Supper’, teeming with symbolic meaning, yet no date has survived with it. At first glance, it’s a bustling kitchen, but look closer: Wtewael intricately weaves the biblical parable into this domestic scene. In the background, the banquet represents the heavenly feast, while the foreground is alive with earthly preparations. Note how the abundance of food, from fish to fowl, isn’t merely still life. Since the early medieval times the fish has been used as a symbol for Christ. This motif, though, appears much earlier, in some of the earliest works of the Roman Empire, as a symbol for Venus. This duality – earthly and divine – encapsulates the painting’s core: the invitation to partake in spiritual nourishment, accessible to all. The emotional resonance lies in the everyday made sacred, a powerful invitation echoing through time. The image resurfaces, evolving, reminding us that the sacred can be found in the mundane.
