Ken Kelly, who sadly died recently, painted this with oils and possibly other media, because it’s got a detailed and graphic feel. It's an image of a muscular warrior figure with long hair, holding spears, alongside a pack of white tigers, including some cute cubs! I can imagine the artist sketching out the main elements, like the imposing figure and the tigers, probably thinking about how they interact with each other and the viewer, while slowly building up layers of paint to create depth, texture, and definition. The fiery, almost volcanic background and the lunar orb contrast with the cool colors of the white tigers, adding to the image's drama and intensity, don’t you think? The artist's confident brushstrokes capture the ferocity and grace of the tigers, as well as the warrior’s power and dominance. The whole scene is designed to make you feel something visceral, something primal and powerful. Kelly was part of a lineage of painters, from Frank Frazetta to Boris Vallejo, who imagined other worlds and populated them with heroic figures. They are all in conversation with one another, and with us.
