Hendrik Meijer created "Trees along a road" using pen in brown and brush in gray in the 18th century. Notice how the artist uses the sepia tones to establish a horizontal composition, where the sky is differentiated from the earth by slight tonal variations. The organization of the trees is paramount to its overall design. The trees frame a small building, perhaps a cottage. The trees on the right side appear blighted or damaged, whereas the tree at the center is full, although its trunk seems worn. The artist's skilled use of line, specifically in the canopy's edges and the path's ruggedness, creates a sense of depth. The interplay between the organic shapes of the trees and the geometric form of the building suggests a broader commentary on the relationship between nature and human intervention. Although seemingly simple, the artist's arrangement creates a dialogue about the landscape.
