Curator: What strikes you when you first view this vibrant abstraction, "Only One"? Editor: Whoa, it feels like looking at Mars through rose-tinted glasses! The blues, oranges, pinks... they’re so visceral, so earthly, but skewed into this other world. Curator: It certainly evokes a strong sense of place. There's a dynamic interplay between Colour Field painting and a recognizable landscape that has this energy of the Southwest desert. Note the distinct blocks and sweeps of unmodulated colors. The piece is made with acrylic paint and canvas. Editor: "Only One"—makes me think about this idea that every perspective is singular, almost solitary, you know? Even looking at the same landscape. I can taste dust in my mouth already just looking at these colors, the dryness almost overwhelms it. The composition sort of funneling me inward and down, like vertigo. Curator: In terms of visual language, the sharp angles might represent existential dilemmas and uncertainty that abstract expressionism tried to symbolize at the time. Also it’s evocative of a topographical map and a journey—possibly alluding to our unique trajectory in life as humans. Editor: I get that—the way the colors bleed together sort of melts all the supposed hard edges anyway. Very cosmic but, for sure, that blue, trapped and then revealed in the right corner makes the piece. It needs a breather there, like a cool pond or even a portal. Curator: The use of vibrant contrasting colours as we can notice are really captivating, aren't they? What a way to finish. Editor: Indeed, I’m going to have this on my mind the next time I see the desert. A fascinating blend of earthly tones and a cosmic vision.
