J.A. Jerichau II made this drawing of a beach with two figures using pencil, with quick, light strokes, like whispers on paper. You can almost feel the artist standing there, squinting slightly, trying to capture the scene before the light changes. I wonder, what was Jerichau thinking as he made each mark? Probably something about the way the boats sit so heavily on the water, and the way the land rises in the distance, like a dream you can almost touch. I can imagine him wanting to capture that feeling, that exact moment of seeing. The pencil is so soft and forgiving, but still leaves a mark. There are shapes here that hint at boats and figures, but they are more like ghosts, quickly sketched and then left to fade a bit. It makes me think about other drawings I have seen by other artists, like the landscape drawings of Bonnard. All of us artists are kind of in conversation, you know, and we leave our marks for others to find.
