Does the placement of figures convey something, beyond just being a record of who was there? Curator: Certainly. Observe how Frederik is positioned – is he part of the scene? His relation to the coffin constructs a semiotic relationship of deference towards his predecessor’s memory and sets him apart as the next successor, thus continuing this semiotic of power. The tonal values and shading create depth, reinforcing the central focus on the symbolic meaning of royal transition.
