Curatorial notes

Curator: Vyacheslav Nazaruk created this mixed-media artwork, titled "Cover for The Mistress of the Copper Mountain by Pavel Bazhov," a mesmerizing tableau vivant. What catches your eye first? Editor: Well, I am immediately drawn to the uncanny luminosity—this figure seems to glow from within. And that piercing gaze! It gives me the chills in the best possible way. Curator: I get that! Nazaruk masterfully captures the mystique of Bazhov's character. She is a mythical guardian, both alluring and formidable, reflecting complex ideas surrounding women’s relationship to nature and ownership. Editor: Exactly! I’m getting echoes of the Earth Mother archetype. The indigenous perspective embedded in folk tales—where nature is not something to be dominated, but revered—resonates profoundly here. Look at the almost collage-like treatment of the geological background; it almost feels like she is emerging organically from the earth itself. Curator: Absolutely. And her size relative to the other figures dwarfs the human presence in this Copper Mountain. You almost feel as though her gaze will immediately know what lays within their hearts. It is no surprise Bazhov's work and by extension, Nazaruk’s depiction, flourished during periods seeking authentic folk roots as expressions of cultural identity. It reminds us to be wary of what is sought deep beneath the Earth. Editor: These stories give symbolic language to the real conflicts around mining, exploitation and class divisions. In some tellings, The Mistress appears as a beautiful protector. Yet, sometimes her beauty is deceptive, ensnaring those who chase the allure of riches. Curator: A mirror reflecting the human condition then! Thank you so much for sharing, that brought the work into another space to exist and breathe. Editor: The pleasure was mine; a truly revealing artwork.
