Shine 2021

Jason Limon created "Shine," a painting that is a modern take on themes of mortality and introspection. The skeleton is almost childlike, and seems to be emerging from the moon itself, hinting at the cyclical nature of life and death. Limon uses images that draw from both Mexican Día de los Muertos iconography and a contemporary interest in the macabre. This intertwining of cultural symbols allows us to consider how different societies approach death and remembrance. He creates a space where cultural and personal narratives intersect, prompting us to reflect on our own relationship with mortality. The word “shine” painted on the work serves as a poignant reminder. Even within the context of death there’s still light and beauty. The piece does not shy away from the realities of death but reframes it within a narrative of reflection and continuing light.
