Here we see a design for window curtains by Léon Laroche. Note the prominent use of draped fabric, a motif that weaves its way through art history. Consider the Greek himation, a draped garment signifying status and intellect. Over centuries, the drape evolved into elaborate curtains, tapestries, and robes adorning religious figures or royalty in paintings. In this design, the fabric is heavy, opulent, and clearly meant to convey a sense of luxury and refinement. This recalls earlier depictions of draped fabric surrounding emperors and gods as the symbol became synonymous with power. The emotional weight of this symbol cannot be understated. It acts on our subconscious, evoking feelings of comfort, security, and perhaps even a longing for an idealised past. And so, the drape continues its journey, resurfacing in modern design, a testament to its enduring power.
