Matta created "Composition XI" using etching, aquatint, and engraving, and the piece feels like a window into another dimension. The colour palette is muted, a ghostly blend of blues, pinks, and grays, as though we are peering into a dreamscape. The texture is really interesting, isn’t it? Look at the surface – the etched lines creating depth, the aquatint adding a misty layer. It’s as if Matta is constructing an alternative reality, layer by layer. The lines that dart across the piece seem to vibrate with a sort of energy. There is a floating pink orb near the top of the piece. It looks like a celestial body, or maybe a strange organic form. These kind of biomorphic shapes remind me of Gorky's dreamscapes. And, like Gorky, Matta opens up a space where imagination can roam freely, inviting us to lose ourselves in the possibilities.
