Carles Delclaux Is made this large painting, “Damunt de tu només les flors” using what seems like a decorative language to describe, well, I guess it’s love! The colors are quite flat, and the image is built up with lots of small marks, kind of like mosaic. Look at the way the body is constructed from a pattern of orange, yellow and white teardrops, each one like a tiny flame. Red hearts dot the surface, and the figure is surrounded by foliage like a fairy queen or goddess. This is a deeply personal vision, rendered in a formal, decorative way. The shapes are stylized and patterned, but there’s also a rawness to the surface, a kind of vulnerability. It reminds me a little of some of the visionary artists like Hilma af Klint, who used abstract forms to convey spiritual ideas. It's less about what we see, and more about what we feel. And art is so amazing at capturing those feelings, isn’t it?
