Thiago Boecan made this collage, Musician, date unknown, from cut paper. Look at how Boecan pieces together contrasting images to create something new and unexpected! It’s like building with scraps, but instead of wood or metal, it’s memories and dreams. The whole figure is built from different contrasting images, some architectural, some portraits, each element has its own texture and story. I love how the head of the guitar is made from two cut out portraits, and how the body has this crazy kind of chicken wire pattern. This collage isn’t just about the image, but also about the act of making, cutting, and pasting. It reminds me of Hannah Höch's Dada collages, where she used images to critique culture. Boecan's work feels like a continuation of that conversation. It reminds us that art is always talking to itself, borrowing and transforming, and leaving space for us to join in.
