Janos Mattis-Teutsch made this abstract painting, Composition, using oil paint. Looking at this painting, I imagine the artist starting with a single shape, maybe that central diamond, and then letting other forms emerge around it, like a conversation in blue. There's a real sense of play here, but also control. The blues are laid down in smooth, even coats, creating a kind of transparency. I wonder if Mattis-Teutsch was thinking about the spiritual when he made this. I imagine he was trying to capture the feeling of transcendence through colour and form. It reminds me a bit of Kandinsky, but with a more geometric edge. It's like he's building a world out of pure, simple shapes, inviting us to get lost in the cool harmony of blues.
