Curatorial notes

Carl Gottfried Nestler created this view of the Plauschen Grund near Dresden with etching sometime in the 18th century. Note the structured lines of the architecture, neatly framing the flowing river. The image is full of a longing for an idyllic past, a symbol of order and nature coexisting harmoniously. The architectural motifs here, especially the pointed roofs, echo similar structures found in medieval cityscapes across Europe. Observe how water appears as a reflective element in this and other idyllic scenes, as well as the bridges and embankments that serve as the boundaries of civilization, and the nature that defies those. Such images became idealized projections of collective memories and cultural values. The psychological pull of such scenes lies in our subconscious desire for harmony and balance, a yearning for the simple life of a bygone era. It’s an echo from the past, resonating through centuries and cultures, reborn in various guises yet retaining its essential allure.
